Read some background information of G. Amontons who was a talented instrument maker, and who improved upon the air thermometer originally invented by Gallileo. Amontons is remembered here for "Amontons' law" which relates the pressure and temperature of a confined gas held at a constant volume. This relationship is sometimes erroneously referred to as Gay-Lussac's law. Gay-Lussac "rediscovered" and publicized the work of Jacques Charles who discovered the relationship between the volume and temperature of a gas at a constant pressure. Now called Charles's law, it was originally called the law of Charles and Gay-Lussac. There is a "Gay-Lussac's law", but it refers to the ratio of the volumes of gases which combine with one another in chemical reactions, otherwise called Gay-Lussac's law of combining volumes.
